The Experimental Linguistics Lab is looking for students who are interested in gaining hands-on research experience. All student assistants are paid for their work.
Speech annotation in Praat
We regularly need student assistants to help annotate speech recordings using Praat. The work involves listening to recordings, inspecting acoustic information, and marking relevant speech events according to a clear annotation protocol.
No previous experience with Praat is required. We will provide training, and students can usually learn the annotation procedure quickly. Previous coursework or experience in phonetics, phonology, linguistics, languages, or related areas is useful but not required.
For some of our current projects, familiarity with Norwegian speech is particularly helpful, so native speakers of Norwegian are especially encouraged to contact us. However, Norwegian as a first language is not a requirement, and we welcome inquiries from students with other language backgrounds.
Because the training for speech annotation is relatively straightforward, we are happy to hear from students even if they are only available for a limited period.
Longer-term research involvement
We are also interested in students who would like to become more deeply involved in experimental linguistics and stay with the lab over a longer period.
Students who are able to make a longer-term commitment may have opportunities to receive training in additional research methods, including EEG data collection and other aspects of experimental work. No previous EEG experience is required.
Students may initially become involved through speech annotation and later take on additional research responsibilities, but there is no expectation that every annotation assistant will make a long-term commitment.

We welcome inquiries from students who are careful, reliable, interested in language research, and willing to learn. Relevant academic experience is an advantage, but we do not expect applicants to arrive with all the necessary technical skills.
